In 1993, when my daughter Jenna was born, I had been in the financial services industry for nearly seven years, and I vowed to teach my kids the fundamentals and principles of money that I hadn’t embraced growing up. Three disciplines were of particular importance – to save before you spend. To invest in great people and great companies; and perhaps most importantly, to never, ever accumulate debt.
The year each of my two kids were born, my wife and I opened both a brokerage and savings account for each; and every birthday since, our gift to them has been an appreciating asset that will add much more significance to their life than a fading material item. In 2003, a friend gave me a copy of Dave Ramsey’s practical book – The Total Money Makeover – and I’ve been sharing his work ever since. His impact is felt by millions, and his legacy is certainly in great hands as his daughter, Rachel Cruze is destined to follow in his footsteps.
