The Disciplines of Leadership Excellence
One of the more memorable leadership insights that I will never forget came from legendary basketball coach, Pat Riley when he recalled advice from his father before accepting his first head coaching job with the Los Angeles Lakers. Riley had never been a head coach, but when Magic Johnson requested a trade in 1981 because he was unhappy playing for Paul Westhead, Lakers owner Jerry Buss turned to the unproven Riley to reigniteJohnson.
A bit unsure of himself, Riley looked to his dad, Lee Riley for one piece of advice that has since propelled him to the pinnacles of NBA success; his dad simply told him that – “Every now and then, somewhere, some place, sometime, you are going to have to plant your feet, stand firm, and make a point about who you are and what you believe in. When that time comes, Pat, you simply have to do it”.
That message was about courage, and its at the heart of Brian Tracy and Peter Chee‘s 12 Disciplines of Leadership Excellence. Here’s what you might be missing ——
