In early 2005, I got what would turn out to be a mind shifting piece of advice from Marcus Buckingham when he released his book , The One Thing You Need To Know. Having bought into Marcus’ strengths approach and synchronizing individual’s talents with their responsibility, my role as a leader was narrowed to only high priority areas. The mantra was simple – “When you want to manage, begin with the person. When you want to lead, begin with the picture of where you are headed”. My team was laser focused on identifying one’s strengths and capitalizing on it; and for me it was about learning what I didn’t like doing and having the courage to stop doing it. Of course, we had to be cautious of not taking the model too far; but as a team, we never lost focus on what mattered. Today, we’re focused much more on supporting the efforts of entrepreneurs and I can’t think of a more important tool than data.
