Out-Executing The Competition

In times of challenge, we look to our leaders to pave the way.  The best ones provide direction when we’re lost, clarity when we’re confused and a sense of perspective when we’re striving for something worthy.  In November, 2012 I remember reading an open letter from Starbucks’ Howard Schultz, celebrating the one year anniversary of Starbucks’ Create Jobs for USA program  Schultz shamelessly questioned, ‘the promise of America’ and reminded us that despite the distorted messages that our political leaders were sending, “…millions of Americans are out of work and many more are working tirelessly yet still unable to adequately care for their families.

Meanwhile, in our nation’s capital, our elected leaders are continuing to put ideology over real solutions.  I love America, but we all know there’s something wrong, and that we are better than this.”  On that day, Schultz stood up for America, and as Americans, we hail his courage and continue to feed off his sense of optimism.  In the book, Out-Executing The Competition, Hewlett-Packard Financial Services President and CEO, Irving Rothman, reminds us that business cycles are an inevitable part of every business, and in order to withstand the down cycle; here’s a suggestion on how to deal with the good times.
