In sports, the greatest athletes are fueled by adversity. In business, the most admired leaders are the bold thinkers who go where others haven’t gone. And in life, the most courageous people are the ones who practice as much or more compassion towards themselves as they do for others. I’m a big believer that the great mystery of life isn’t necessarily how we deal with our circumstances; I see it much more having to do with our ability to manage ourselves. It was the great Peter Drucker who taught us one of the most urgent lessons when he proclaimed the great challenge of the twenty-first century as self-management. Of course, that’s easier said than done.
In a recent interview, NFL quarterback Peyton Manning was asked how he bounced back after throwing a bad interception and he simply said “I always get back to zero” – meaning back to the present moment.
